The .au Direct domain names will be available starting on March 24, 2022, according to auDA. This enables you to register with a direct .au domain name without the customary .com.au ending (eg, domain.au).
All current owners of .com.au, .net.au, or .org.au domain names have had their names prioritised for a 6-month period (where eligible). Conetix will register (on your behalf) each domain you have requested as soon as it goes live on the 24th.
The .au Direct does not take the place of the current .au namespaces (.com.au, .net.au, and .org.au); rather, it is an extension to them. You can have a name and URL that are shorter thanks to the .au direct.
The second modification is to make it possible for anyone with a link to Australia to register an .au Direct domain (ie, no ABN required).
The.au Direct domains will first be available via Conetix for $15/year.
The initial domain registration is only valid for a year.
If your .au domain registration is not challenged after the first year, you can keep it for up to 5 years.
